"Digital Retro is the moment I struck out artistically. I'm really proud of it," Jeff Slate, the founder of The Badge said of the 15th anniversary deluxe edition of the band's debut, due in late October 2013 on iTunes and all other digital outlets. A CD version will also be available.
The tracklist includes the 10 original tracks that made up the original 1998 version of Digital Retro, plus 8 bonus tracks. All of the tracks were remastered from the orignal mixes by Tom Borthwick, who has mastered releases by The Badge and Jeff Slate since 2002, at SIStudios.
The tracklist for the deluxe, expanded edition of Digital Retro is:

2) Mr. Destiny [2013 Remaster]
3) Guthrie Palace [2013 Remaster]

11) What I Want [Live In NYC]
12) Love Is Gone [Live In NYC]
13) My Dolly [Live In NYC]
14) What I Want [Early Version]
15) Mr. Destiny [8-Track Demo]
16) Passion's Taking Over ["Watching Rainbows" 8-Track Demo]
17) My Dolly ("Fab 4 Free 4 All" Theme) [Instrumental]
18) Unfinshed Business [Early Rough Mix]
"I hadn't listened to most of the songs in a very long time," Slate confessed recently. "When we did The Best of The Badge a few years ago we didn't have the orignal session masters available, but this time we did. It was really exicting to hear those mixes. And given how much digital technology has improved in the past 15 years, they sound really fresh and alive. I fell in love with the album all over again."
The Badge formed in 1997 and Digital Retro was recorded when Slate was fresh off his experience working with The Who's Pete Townshend. In fact, Simon Townshend and keyboardist Josh Phillips -- who appeared on The Who guitarist's solo album Psychoderelict -- appear on "My Dolly", which Slate co-wrote with Simon Townshend during the sessions for a solo EP later released as The Townshend Tapes.
"It was a fantastic time artistically," Slate recalled of the beginnings of The Badge. "I was writing all the time and playing with great people. It seemed like the sky was the limit. We started recording the album on the day Ronnie Lane (of the Small Faces and Faces) died. I loved Ronnie and it was terribly sad, but it was inspiring and fitting too, in a weird way. Those are all the things I hear when I listen to Digital Retro now.
"I was honored to be there at the beginnings of The Badge and to play on this album," drummer Alex Alexander, who still plays with Slate, said recently. "Making this great music was so much fun."
Along with "My Dolly", which still features in Slate's live set, the album includes "Watching Rainbows", which appeared in the television show One Tree Hill, and "Unfinished Business", a song Slate ranks as one of his best.
"I played 'Unfinished Business' recently at a songwriters' event and it brought the house down," Slate said. "I was taken aback, but it was extremely flattering."
Slate also dug through his personal archive and found nearly 40 minutes of additional material to add to the new, deluxe edition.
"The live tracks were recorded at a show here in New York City back before the album came out," Slate explained. "Those mixes are straight off the board, so they're rough, but they're fun to hear. The early version of 'What I Want' was an almost complete version. Most notably, Alex (Alexander) hadn't laid down his drums. It's got a cool bit where we reversed the drum loop and what's amazing is that when we cut the live drums Alex charted that out and actually played the backwards part! 'Mr. Destiny' and 'Passion's Taking Over' are 8-track demos from a little while before we really started working on the album. At that point 'Watching Rainbows' was a completely different song. The instrumental version of 'My Dolly' was created a few years ago for our friends at the Fab 4 Free 4 All, a Beatles-themed radio show. Finally, we wrap things up with an early session mix 'Unfinshed Business'."
Final release details will be posted here soon.
